From George Eastman House : Notes On Photographs

Jump to: navigation, search

The natural wax produced by bees to store honey in the hive. Beeswax was heated and combined with solvents and oils to produce a paste for coating prints. Such coatings improved the tones of salted paper prints and other processes without the necessity of binders. The coatings also provided an atmospheric barrier.[1]
